Libertrim: Uses, dosage, contraindications and side effects

Libertrim, debridat, or, as it is known generically, trimebutine, is a drug that is part of the group of analgesic and antispasmodics that acts in cases of gastric and intestinal motility disorders. It is described that this drug intervenes in the entire feeding mechanism.

Despite treating relatively simple conditions, it is a drug that, by crossing the blood-brain barrier, can generate severe conditions in the neurological system, so its use must be under strict medical supervision.

One of the fundamental characteristics of Libertrim is that it has a double pharmacological action, the first of which is that it can act by stimulating gastrointestinal smooth muscle contractions or, conversely, inhibiting them, depending directly on the previous contractile state.

If you want to know more about this drug, we invite you to continue reading this FastlyHealarticle about Libertrim: what it is for, dosage, contraindications, and side effects.

Libertrim medication: what is it for

Libertrim is an antispasmodic and analgesic drug absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, which acts primarily on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract with dual pharmacological action. Depending on the previous contractile state of the muscle, it inhibits or stimulates contractions and is a weak agonist that allows it to act as an analgesic.

It is part of the group of drugs that can only be acquired under prior medical indication. It is available under the generic name trimebutine or the trade names: Libertrim SII, debridat, prescol, or tempolib.

The Libertrim is especially useful for:

  • Crampy abdominal pain.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux.
  • Esophagitis.
  • Poor digestion
  • Flatulence
  • Stomachache.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Postoperative in case of intestinal paralysis.
  • Hipo.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Gastric ulcer.
  • Pyloric spasm.
  • Vomiting from pregnancy or hyperemesis gravidarum.
  • Difficulty carrying food and liquid into the stomach or what is medically known as achalasia.

Libertrim dosage

The dosage or dosage of Libertrim depends directly on the patient’s age and the presentation of the drug. It is available in the following presentations:

  • 50 mg tablets
  • 100 mg tablets.
  • 200 mg tablets.
  • 300 mg tablets.
  • 20 mg / 1 ml oral solution.
  • Injectable solution with 50mg / 5mg.

Kids

The dose must be indicated by the pediatrician and will also depend on the patient’s weight:

  • <1 year: 12 mg every 8 or 12 hours.
  • 1–3 years: 24 mg every 8 to 12 hours.
  • 3–5 years 48 mg every 8 hours.

Adults

  • The medical dose ranges from 100 to 200 mg every 8 hours. The established maximum daily dose is 600 mg. The drug should be administered 15 minutes before meals.
  • In the case of the intravenous injectable presentation, health personnel must administer it diluted and slowly (from 5 to 10 minutes) to avoid adverse effects. The injectable presentation is used as an attack dose and then continues with the oral maintenance dose.

Libertrim: contraindications and side effects

This medicine is contraindicated, especially in the case of:

  • Hypersensitivity to trimebutine.
  • Hypersensitivity to aspirin.

On the other hand, when using this drug, extreme caution should be exercised in case of:

  • People with kidney failure.
  • The use of alcohol should be avoided as this aggravates the causes for which trimebutine or Libertrim is indicated.
  • It is not recommended to use it during the first trimester of pregnancy. In the case of the infant, it has a low risk of use. However, the specialist must indicate the exact dose.

The side effects described before the use of Libertrim are:

  • Redness of the skin.
  • Urticaria.
  • Constipation.
  • Stomachache.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Increase in urine production.

Other less common side effects are:

  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Headache.
  • Dry mouth
  • Soft spot.
  • Deafness.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Blurry vision.

Libertrim SII: libertrim and simethicone

There is a new pharmacological combination that includes trimebutine, it is known as Libertrim SII, and it is available in presentations:

  • Simethicone 100 mg / 37.5 mg tablets: the ideal dose is one tablet every 8 hours in the case being used in adolescents. In adults, it is recommended 1 to 2 tablets every 8 hours.
  • 200 mg / 75 mg simethicone tablets: the established dose for adults, in this case, is one tablet every 8 or 12 hours. It is recommended to administer 15 to 30 minutes before meals. The period of use must be established by the specialist.

The Libertrim SII is indicated in the case of:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Colitis.
  • Duodenitis.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux.
  • Esophagitis.
  • Crampy abdominal pain.
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal pain from excess gas.

Libertrim IBS is also absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and is eliminated through the urinary tract. It has an effect that regulates smooth muscles at the level of the digestive tract, and its anti-inflammatory action is given by an indirect effect that generates vasoconstriction. On the other hand, simethicone is physiologically inert, which acts as an antifoam reducing the tension of gas bubbles (belching or flatus), allowing them to break and be eliminated.

This medicine is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to the active principles, in case of intestinal perforation, in case of intestinal obstruction, and case of myasthenia gravis.

Its use is also contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy, depending on the risk/benefit assessed by the specialist.

In rare cases, they manifest as side effects:

  • Headache.
  • Urticaria.

Libertrim IBS is used in a wide range of conditions. However, it can be purchased with a prescription, so a specialized assessment before use is recommended.
