Thyroid diseases

by Alivia Nyhan

Thyroid diseases are common, and women are more likely to develop them than men. There are several types of thyroid diseases, and they can have different symptoms. Some thyroid diseases can be treated with medication, while others may require surgery. Thyroid problems in men are often undiagnosed because the symptoms can be mistaken for other conditions. Common symptoms of a thyroid problem include fatigue, weight gain or loss, hair loss, anxiety, and depression.

What is thyroid disease?

Thyroid disease is a condition that affects the thyroid, a small gland located in the neck. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. Thyroid disease can cause the gland to produce too much or too little of these hormones. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including weight gain or loss, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.

What causes thyroid disease?

There are many causes of thyroid disease, including autoimmune conditions, genetic defects, and infections. autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease are the most common cause of thyroid disease and occur when the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Genetic defects can cause problems with the thyroid gland from birth, and infections can damage the gland and cause it to malfunction.

Thyroid tests

Thyroid tests are vital for identifying if someone has a thyroid disorder. A simple blood test can measure levels of thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Low levels of TSH hormone may indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while high levels may indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). TSH levels either too high or too low may indicate a thyroid disorder.

What common symptoms can happen with thyroid disease?

There are many different symptoms that can happen with thyroid disease. Some of the more common ones are fatigue, weight gain or loss, feeling cold or heat intolerance, dry skin, hair loss, anxiety, and depression. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor and get checked out.
