Gum disease is most common in adults but can occur at any age. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease that can damage the bone and tissue that support the teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.

Types of gum infections

Types include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is when the gums are swollen and red and bleed easily. Periodontitis is when the gums are so infected that they pull away from the teeth, and the bones and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed.

Some other common gum issues:

Inflamed gums: Inflamed gums, also called gingivitis, is the early stage of gum disease. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. Aloe vera is a popular home remedy for a number of ailments, including inflamed gums.

Gum pain: Gum pain is one of the first symptoms of gum disease. It is important to see a dentist as soon as possible if you experience any pain in your gums. Other symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums, receding gums, and bad breath.

White gums: White gums are a sign of healthy gums. However, when gums become red, swollen, or bleed, it could be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease is a serious infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss.

Swollen gums: Home remedies for swollen gums include using salt water rinses, oil pulling, and aloe vera. You can also try over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen.

Gingivitis: Home remedies for gingivitis include rinsing with a saltwater solution, using a soft toothbrush, and avoiding tobacco products. If you have gingivitis, it’s important to see a dentist so the condition doesn’t progress to periodontitis.

Dental pyorrhea: Dental pyorrhea is a serious gum infection that can damage the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Early symptoms of dental pyorrhea include bleeding gums, bad breath, and pain when chewing.

Lump: If you have a lump on your gum that is sore or tender, it could be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease is a serious infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss. If you think you might have gum disease, see your dentist right away.

Pus on the gums, bleeding gums, and persistent bad breath are all warning signs of gum disease. If you notice these symptoms, you should see a dentist as soon as possible.
