Bacterial infections can be contagious and cause serious illness. It is important to see a doctor if you think you have a bacterial infection. Early diagnosis and treatment are important. Symptoms of a bacterial infection can include fever, chills, body aches, and fatigue.

What are bacterial infections?

Bacterial infections are caused by bacteria, which are tiny, single-celled organisms. These infections can occur anywhere in the body and range from mild to life-threatening. Some common bacterial infections include respiratory infections, such as pneumonia; skin infections, such as cellulitis; and food poisoning, usually caused by bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli. Treatment for a bacterial infection usually involves taking antibiotics.

What are the symptoms of a bacterial infection?

There are many different symptoms of bacterial infections, depending on the type of infection and the area of the body that is affected. Common symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches. More specific symptoms may include coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and sore throat. If you think you may have a bacterial infection, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible so that you can receive the proper treatment.

What causes bacterial infections?

Bacterial infections are caused by bacteria that enter the body through cuts, breaks in the skin, or other openings. The bacteria multiply and cause an infection.

What are the complications of bacterial infections?

Bacterial infections can cause a number of complications, including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition when an infection causes your body to release inflammatory chemicals into your bloodstream. These chemicals can trigger a severe reaction, causing your blood pressure to drop and your body to go into shock. Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Symptoms of pneumonia include coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fever. Meningitis is an infection of the membranes that surround your brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of meningitis include headache, fever, stiff neck, and confusion.

Common Bacterial Infections:

Typhoid fever: Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, and tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All three of these diseases can be deadly if they are not treated properly.

Yaws: Yaws is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the skin. It is caused by Treponema pallidum, which is closely related to the bacteria that cause syphilis. Yaws are most common in tropical and subtropical regions and are typically seen in children between the ages of 5 and 15.

Scarlet fever: Scarlet fever in pregnancy can be a serious illness for both mother and child. If you think you have scarlet fever, it’s important to see a doctor right away.

Pseudomonas infection: Pseudomonas infection is a type of bacterial infection that can occur in different parts of the body. This infection is often seen in people who have a weakened immune system, as well as those who are hospitalized.

Listeriosis: Listeriosis is a bacterial infection that can be very serious, even life-threatening. It is caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which is found in soil, water, and some animals.

Tetanus: Tetanus is a bacterial infection that affects the nervous system and can be deadly. It’s important to get vaccinated against tetanus so that you can avoid getting this potentially fatal infection.

Cat scratch disease: Cat scratch disease is a bacterial infection that a person can get after being scratched by a cat. The bacteria that cause the disease are found in the saliva of some cats. The disease is usually mild, but it can sometimes be severe.

Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can be deadly in humans and animals. The bacteria are spread through the urine of infected animals and can enter the human body through cuts or breaks in the skin, eyes, nose, or mouth.

Meat-eating bacteria: Meat-eating bacteria is one of the major causes of bacterial infections. Bacteria infect the body by getting into cuts or other open wounds. Bacteria can also enter the body through the nose, mouth, or eyes.

Human brucellosis: Human brucellosis is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans from infected animals. The infection is most commonly spread through contact with infected milk or meat products, but can also be spread through contact with infected animal tissues or fluids.
