Buttock abscess: causes

The causes of a skin abscess in the buttock are several, among which are:

  • Obesity: being overweight can make the buttock area much more humid. The constant friction when walking generates skin lesions, which can cause an abscess in this region.
  • Alterations in the skin: the company of wounds, erosion, or puncture can generate contamination with bacteria that trigger an infectious process and accumulation of pus in the buttock area.
  • When there is an injury, a hygienically inadequate gluteal area may allow the proliferation of bacteria, thus causing the abscess.
  • The presence of thick and stiff hair can lead to the appearance of a spot in the gluteal region due to an infection.
  • Immunosuppressed patients: The immune system is depressed in these patients, so they are more likely to suffer from infectious processes that can progress to the formation of an abscess.
  • After applying a poorly placed intramuscular injection or without the proper hygienic measures in the gluteal region, an infectious process can occur that triggers the accumulation of pus and, consequently, the abscess.
  • The use of tight clothing causes friction with the skin to generate contaminated lesions, giving rise to the appearance of an abscess in the buttock.

Symptoms of an abscess in the buttock

Symptoms that can accompany a skin abscess include the following:

  • Fever and chills
  • Excruciating swelling on palpation.
  • Hardening of the affected area.
  • The presence of pus and suppuration of blood is accompanied by an unpleasant odor.

Buttock abscess: treatment

The treatment of a skin abscess will depend on the symptoms you present; the surgeon will be in charge of selecting the therapy to follow according to the conditions in which the spot is found.

Some small abscesses do not require drainage; that is, only with drug treatment do they resolve independently after taking pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics. In this sense, the placement of warm compresses can be beneficial since they contribute to accelerating the formation of the point and the drainage of the abscess.

In cases where they are large and painful, the area is sedated and drained; a small incision can be made with the scalpel or punctured. This will be enough to initiate the secretion discharge from the inside. After draining the abscess completely, the area should be washed with a tremendous physiological solution; the site will be covered with gauze, even inside, for 24 to 48 hours.

When more than one abscess is present, in the presence of infectious cellulitis, or the patient is immunosuppressed, the use of antibiotics after studying the secretion is recommended.
